DPKr-3: Stylized Rail Experience (Odesa)
The Story:
Railway stations are high-stress environments, and for young travelers, the wait can feel endless. The objective was to transform a public waiting zone into an engaging, thematic playground. The heart of this space is a stylized, child-friendly adaptation of the DPKr-3 diesel-train — a signature of modern rail transport.
The Design Philosophy:
The primary design challenge was to translate the complex, aerodynamic DNA of a real locomotive into a safe and welcoming play environment. We meticulously simplified the train’s proportions while preserving its iconic silhouette and recognizable livery.
By deconstructing the standard industrial geometries of the original DPKr-3, we created a «friendly» version that invites interaction. The cockpit serves as a portal for role-playing, while the exterior panels integrate sensory elements. We replaced heavy industrial materials with child-safe alternatives, ensuring every curve and corner supports both safety and imaginative play.
The Result:
This project demonstrates how industrial design can bridge the gap between heavy engineering and human-centered social spaces. The stylized DPKr-3 has become a landmark within the station, turning a transit point into a destination and proving that even a technical object can be reimagined to provide comfort and joy.
